Khwai & Moremi Game Reserve

A landscape where wildlife moves freely between land and water

Overview

Khwai and the Moremi Game Reserve form one of Botswana’s most diverse and wildlife-rich regions. Here, open floodplains meet mopane woodland and riverine forests, creating a landscape where animals move constantly between ecosystems.

Seasonal water shapes everything. Channels rise and fall, drawing wildlife into shifting patterns across the land. Elephants, buffalo, and antelope move in large numbers, while predators follow closely behind.

Unlike many protected areas, the Khwai concession is community-managed, adding a deeper connection between people, wildlife, and place.

It is a region defined by movement and contrast — where no two game drives are ever the same, and every day unfolds differently.

What It Feels Like

Early mornings in cool, still air
The distant call of lions before sunrise
Elephants crossing slowly through the road ahead
Dust rising in golden light behind a moving herd
Evenings alive with sound, long after the sun has set

Best For

Classic game drives and big game encounters
Predator sightings and wildlife density
A balance of land and water experiences
First-time safaris and returning travellers
Those wanting variety within a single region

When to Visit

July to October (Peak season)
Wildlife concentrates as water becomes scarce, creating exceptional game viewing conditions. Clear skies, dry landscapes, and high predator activity make this the most consistent time for sightings.

Ideal for
Big game, predators, and classic safari conditions

April to June & November to December (Transition season)
The landscape begins to shift as water levels change. Wildlife remains abundant, with fewer vehicles and a quieter atmosphere.

Ideal for
Balanced experiences and fewer crowds

January to March (Seasonal months)
The bush transforms with rain, bringing lush vegetation, dramatic skies, and an abundance of young animals. Wildlife is more dispersed, but the experience feels raw and immersive.

Ideal for
Photography, birdlife, and a more seasonal safari
