Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans

A landscape shaped by salt, sky, and seasonal transformation

Overview

Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks offer one of Botswana’s most unique safari experiences. Vast salt pans stretch beyond the horizon, broken only by scattered palms, open grasslands, and ancient baobabs. It is a place defined by space and silence, where scale becomes part of the experience.

Unlike the river systems of the Delta or Chobe, this is a land of extremes. In the dry months, the pans lie stark and endless under wide blue skies. With the arrival of the rains, the landscape transforms as grass returns, water gathers, and one of Africa’s largest zebra migrations moves through the region.

Nxai Pan brings a slightly different feel, with its open plains and iconic Baines’ Baobabs standing isolated against the horizon. Makgadikgadi, by contrast, feels more remote and elemental, with fewer people and a stronger sense of raw wilderness.

This is a region that rewards those looking for something beyond classic safari. It is less about constant sightings, and more about atmosphere, movement, and moments that feel completely removed from the modern world.

What It Feels Like

Endless horizons with no sense of boundary
The stillness of salt pans stretching into the distance
Baobab trees standing alone against the sky
Zebra moving in long lines across fresh grass after rain
Cool, quiet nights under vast open skies

Best For

Unique landscapes unlike anywhere else in Botswana
Zebra migration and seasonal wildlife movement
Photography and dramatic open scenery
Travelers seeking space, silence, and contrast
Those combining with Delta or Moremi for variety

When to Visit

December to March (Peak season)
The arrival of rain transforms the pans into grassland. Zebra and other herbivores migrate into the region, bringing predators with them. The landscape feels alive, green, and constantly changing.

Ideal for
Migration, young animals, birdlife, and a more dynamic safari

April to November (Transition season)
The landscape dries out, returning to open pans and sparse vegetation. Wildlife becomes more scattered, but the sense of scale and isolation becomes even more pronounced. Conditions are excellent for photography, with clear skies and strong light.

Ideal for
Landscapes, solitude, and a more atmospheric experience
